Virgin Active club estate

Every club rated for energy and water from the metering and utility data Virgin Active already collects — shown here for twelve representative clubs of the 130+ across South Africa. EPCs are generated and registered automatically; water is rated concurrently from the same data.

Synchronised control · heat for the people actually coming

Occupancy measured by ceiling people-count sensors and turnstile data — water heaters, aircon and heat pumps scheduled together with grid, max demand and solar in one control philosophy
PRECONDITIONING HEAT MAP · NEXT 24 Hwhen each area runs, when it preconditions, and the occupancy driving both — pool pre-heats 2–4 h before its busy windows

Occupancy sensors at the turnstiles and studios feed the same engine: heating and cooling ramp as members arrive, follow them through the club, and wind down as they leave. When occupancy runs above or below forecast, pre-heat starts earlier or is skipped; when solar is producing, heat pumps run first; when the club nears its notified maximum demand, deferrable loads stage back automatically.

Metered devices · measured where you know the waste is

Per-device sub-metering — Hexing & Milesight, data via MOL into this platform
DeviceMeter / sensorLive drawTodayControlvs baseline

±R1,000-class single-phase meters are fitted only on the circuits worth measuring — the GreenX Scan app walk-through builds each club's device register so metering follows your team's intuition about where the waste sits. Water devices get Milesight ultrasonic metering with remote valve control; everything lands in this dashboard through MOL's acquisition layer.

Demand headroom · when the club flirts with its maximum

The demand charge is set by the worst half-hour of the month — staged pre-heat, load sequencing and sauna/HVAC discipline pull the peak down without touching member experience
DEMAND PEAK VS DEMAND IN USE · THIS MONTH% of notified maximum demand per 2-hour block — red blocks are where the demand charge is made

Heads-up: Time-of-Use. Clubs on ToU tariffs pay a premium in the evening window — winter peak rates run several times off-peak. The same evening blocks are also the expensive ones, so one control move — shifting pre-heat earlier — cuts both the demand charge and the ToU premium. Each club's tariff is flagged and its shiftable load quantified in the pilot.

Water use

Daytime vs night-flow, last 12 weeks · night-flow above 15% of daytime signals a leak, a running pool circuit or a stuck shower valve

How the certificate is produced

No manual assessment cycle
Metering API→kWh/m² · ℓ/student→Energy + water rating→EPC generated & registered

Qualifying club buildings receive SANEDI-registered compliance EPCs; the rest get clearly labelled voluntary EPC-principle benchmarks — one automatic pipeline across 130+ clubs, no manual assessment cycles.

Green Seeds: the inter-club challenge

Six clubs compete on improvement against their own baseline. Club GMs and shift teams see their score on WhatsApp each Monday, staff drive the challenges, and members see their club climb the leaderboard — with rewards for the clubs that make savings stick.

Meter IQ · from reading to verified saving

Not another five-minute-interval dashboard. Every abnormality Meter IQ detects becomes a case: flagged, routed to the responsible person, acted on, and closed only when the saving shows up in the data. These are four representative cases, end to end.

    What a case always contains

    Meter data→Abnormality detected→Insight + notification→Responsible person informed→Corrective action→Reduction visible in data→Saving quantified

The same case data feeds Green Seeds — the person who closed the case is the person the scorecard congratulates on Monday. Insight to action to verified saving, with a name attached at every step.
