St Nicholas campus portfolio

One co-educational Anglican campus in Pietermaritzburg, Reception to Grade 12 — Junior School, High School and the shared facilities between them. Every building rated for energy and water from the metering data the school already collects: compliance EPCs generated and registered automatically for qualifying instruction buildings, water rated concurrently, each building re-rated month by month. Deus ducit — and the numbers follow.

Synchronised control · heat and cool for the school day

Occupancy measured from access control, with the timetable as forecast — geysers, classroom HVAC, kitchens and the pool scheduled together, item by item
PRECONDITIONING HEAT MAP · NEXT 24 Hwhen each item runs, when it preconditions, and the occupancy driving both — classrooms pre-cooled before the first bell, the pool pre-heated on the solar window ahead of afternoon sport

Each geyser bank, HVAC zone and kitchen circuit is controlled at item level. The timetable is the forecast: classrooms are cool when the first bell rings and wind down as classes empty; geysers heat ahead of sport and aftercare, not all day; the pool pre-heats 2–4 hours before the afternoon session while the sun is paying for it. On weekends and school holidays the pre-heat is simply skipped — and that skipped heating is where much of the saving lives.

How the certificate is produced

No manual assessment cycle
Metering API→kWh/m² · ℓ/learner→Energy + water rating→EPC generated & registered

Qualifying instruction buildings receive SANEDI-registered compliance EPCs; nursery, aftercare and sports buildings get clearly labelled voluntary EPC-principle benchmarks — all from the same automatic pipeline, at group scale.

Green Seeds: the buildings challenge

Six buildings on one campus compete on improvement against their own baseline. Learners and staff see their school’s score on WhatsApp each Monday, eco-councils drive the challenges, and the winning routines carry into the next term.
